How Can I Tell If I Need TMJ Treatment?

Back to Blogs

If you’ve been waking up with jaw pain, noticing a clicking sound when you chew, or dealing with persistent headaches that seem to have no clear cause, your temporomandibular joint, better known as the TMJ, may be at the root of the problem. TMJ disorders are more common than most people realize, and they’re also frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed entirely. Understanding the signs can help you get the right care before the condition worsens.

What Is the TMJ?

TMJ disorders can present in a surprising variety of ways, which is part of why they’re so often overlooked or attributed to other causes. Some of the most telling signs include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness, particularly in the morning upon waking, or after meals that involve a lot of chewing
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth, which may or may not be accompanied by discomfort
  • Limited jaw movement: difficulty opening your mouth fully, or a jaw that feels stiff or locks in place temporarily
  • Chronic headaches or migraines, especially tension-type headaches that originate near the temples, which are closely connected to the jaw muscles
  • Ear pain or a feeling of fullness in the ears without any sign of infection, since the TMJ sits directly adjacent to the ear canal
  • Neck, shoulder, and upper back tension: The muscles of the jaw are interconnected with those of the neck and shoulders, meaning that TMJ dysfunction can radiate discomfort well beyond the jaw itself.
  • Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism): Often happening during sleep, this places enormous stress on the TMJ and is both a common cause and consequence of TMJ disorders.

What Causes TMJ Disorders?

The causes are varied and sometimes overlapping. Stress is one of the biggest contributors, as it tends to manifest physically through jaw clenching and muscle tension. A misaligned bite, injury to the jaw, arthritis, or worn-down teeth can also place uneven pressure on the joint over time.

How Dr. Passamano Can Help

The first step is a thorough evaluation of your jaw, bite, and symptoms. From there, treatment options may include a custom nightguard to reduce the impact of grinding, bite adjustments, physical therapy recommendations, or other targeted approaches depending on the underlying cause. Dr. Passamano takes a conservative, measured approach, addressing the source of the problem rather than simply managing symptoms.

The most important thing to know about TMJ disorders is that they are treatable. You don’t have to live with the pain, the headaches, or the discomfort. If any of the signs above sound familiar, we’d love to help you find some relief. Call our Irvine office or request an appointment online today.
