Few words in dentistry trigger more anxiety than “root canal.” But here’s the truth that most people are surprised to learn: a root canal is not the painful, dreaded procedure its reputation suggests. In fact, it’s quite the opposite; it’s a procedure that relieves pain. And in many cases, it’s also the procedure that saves a tooth that would otherwise be lost entirely.
Beneath the hard outer enamel and the layer of dentin underneath lies a soft inner chamber called the pulp. This pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Once a tooth is fully mature, it can survive without the pulp, which is the fundamental principle that makes root canal therapy possible.
A root canal becomes necessary when the pulp inside the tooth becomes infected, inflamed, or dies. This can happen for several reasons:
There are several warning signs worth paying attention to, including severe or persistent toothache, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, darkening or discoloration of the tooth, swelling or tenderness in the nearby gum tissue, and a persistent pimple-like bump on the gums near the affected tooth. In some cases, infected pulp causes no noticeable symptoms at all, which is another reason why regular dental exams are so valuable.
During a root canal, Dr. Passamano carefully removes the infected or inflamed pulp, cleans and shapes the inner canals of the tooth, and seals the space to prevent reinfection. A crown is typically placed afterward to protect the remaining tooth structure. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience is compared to what they had imagined.
Saving your natural tooth is always our goal at My Dentist Joe. Root canal therapy gives an otherwise compromised tooth a second chance, and with proper care, a treated tooth can last for many years.
