Everything You Need to Know About Gum Disease

Back to Blogs

Gum disease is one of the most common and most underestimated health conditions in the United States. Studies suggest that nearly half of all American adults have some form of it, yet many have no idea. That’s because gum disease is often painless in its early stages, progressing quietly without obvious symptoms until it has already caused significant damage. Understanding what gum disease is, how to recognize it, and how it’s treated is one of the most important things you can do to protect both your smile and your overall health.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection of the tissues that surround and support the teeth. It begins when plaque builds up along and below the gumline. When plaque isn’t removed through regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings, it hardens into tartar that can only be removed by a dental professional. Over time, the bacteria trigger an inflammatory response that, left untreated, can spread to the underlying bone and eventually lead to tooth loss.

The Two Main Stages of Gum Disease

  • Gingivitis is the earliest and most treatable stage, confined to the gum tissue itself and not yet affecting the underlying bone. Symptoms may include red, swollen, or tender gums that bleed easily during brushing or flossing. The encouraging news is that gingivitis is fully reversible with professional treatment and improved home care.
  • Periodontitis develops when gingivitis is left untreated and the infection spreads deeper, affecting the bone and connective tissue that anchor the teeth in place. Gums pull away from the teeth, pockets form, bone loss occurs, and without intervention, tooth loss becomes a real possibility. Unlike gingivitis, the damage caused by periodontitis cannot be fully reversed, only managed and stabilized.

Common Risk Factors

Several factors can increase susceptibility to gum disease beyond poor oral hygiene, including smoking or tobacco use, diabetes, hormonal changes, certain medications that reduce saliva flow, and genetics. Patients with any of these risk factors especially benefit from consistent professional monitoring.

How Gum Disease Is Treated

Treatment depends on the stage and severity of the disease. Gingivitis often responds fully to a thorough professional cleaning combined with improved home care. For more advanced periodontitis, Dr. Passamano may recommend scaling and root planing: a non-surgical deep cleaning that removes bacteria and tartar from below the gumline. Following active treatment, regular maintenance visits every three to four months are essential for keeping the disease stable.

Don’t Wait for Symptoms

Because gum disease so often develops without pain or obvious warning signs, the only reliable way to catch it early is through regular dental exams. At My Dentist Joe, Dr. Passamano performs a thorough periodontal evaluation at every visit.
