How We Repair Broken or Damaged Fillings

Back to Blogs

Dental fillings are durable, but they aren’t indestructible. Whether you have a filling that’s been in place for a decade or one that’s only a few years old, fillings can crack, chip, wear down, or fall out entirely, often without much warning. When that happens, it’s important to act promptly. A damaged or missing filling leaves the underlying tooth vulnerable to bacteria, decay, and further structural damage that can quickly escalate into a more complex and costly problem.

At My Dentist Joe, repairing damaged fillings is one of the most common procedures we perform, and in most cases it’s a straightforward process that can be completed in a single visit.

How Do Fillings Get Damaged?

Understanding what causes fillings to fail can help you catch problems early. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Age and normal wear: Even the best fillings have a lifespan. Over years of chewing, biting, and grinding, the material can gradually weaken and break down.
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism): The excessive force generated by nighttime grinding places significant stress on fillings, causing them to crack or wear prematurely.
  • Biting into hard foods: Crunching on ice, hard candies, or unexpectedly hard objects can fracture a filling.
  • Decay around the filling: Bacteria can work their way into the margins of an existing filling over time, causing new decay to develop underneath or around it, a condition sometimes called recurrent decay.
  • Temperature changes: Repeated expansion and contraction of dental materials from hot and cold foods can gradually compromise the bond between the filling and the tooth.

Signs Your Filling May Be Damaged

Sometimes a damaged filling is obvious; you feel something hard in your mouth and realize a piece has broken off. Other times, the signs are subtler. Watch for:

  • Tooth sensitivity to temperature, pressure, or sweets that wasn’t present before
  • A rough or sharp edge you can feel with your tongue
  • Pain or discomfort when biting down on that tooth
  • A visible crack, dark spot, or gap around the filling
  • Food consistently getting caught in or around a specific tooth

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait to see a dentist. Even a filling that looks intact may have developed microscopic cracks or gaps that allow bacteria to seep in.

How We Fix a Damaged Filling

The appropriate repair depends on the extent of the damage. In many cases, Dr. Passamano can replace the filling with a new tooth-colored composite restoration that blends naturally with the surrounding tooth. If the damage is more extensive, or if significant decay has developed underneath, a crown may be the more appropriate solution to fully protect and restore the tooth.

True to his conservative philosophy, Dr. Passamano will always recommend the least invasive option that genuinely addresses the problem and sets your tooth up for long-term success.

Don’t ignore a damaged filling. Small problems have a way of becoming bigger ones when left unattended. Call our Irvine office at (949) 572-7708 or request an appointment online and we’ll take great care of you.
